Woodbine Beach

By |2016-07-16T03:28:00+00:00July 16th, 2016|Summer 2016|

One of the more special parts about Toronto is that the bustling city stands alongside Lake Ontario. In addition to adding beauty to the city, it has provided a little get-a-way for people to relax without leaving the city. Before becoming what is now known as ‘The Beaches’, the region used to be cottage country, with larger houses and tree along the water. However, as the city grew, the area was transformed into four main beaches with volleyball nets, country clubs and of course lots of sand!

Today Lingua and She Herencia had a beach day there, experiencing the typical Torontonian summer lifestyle of a Friday afternoon relaxing and playing under the sun.

Meanwhile, Greensystem had quite a different day. The very large group spent the first half of the day split into two groups, one half going for a tour of the University of Toronto and the other to a nearby park and public pool. After spending the day outdoors and breaking for dinner, the entire group came together and went up the CN tower. The gorgeous view is enough to make anyone fall for the beauty of Toronto, while the glass floors add nervous excitement. The students had fun experiencing the wild winds at the top which were a fair warning for the rainstorm to come!

By |2016-07-14T05:13:00+00:00July 14th, 2016|Summer 2016|

Taking a glimpse inside: the Level 1 classroom. For today, students started the day with unit 3 page 22. The lesson today was past, present and future tense verbs and how to use them correctly in a sentence. They did group worksheets and played games to practice.

After class most groups went on a trip to Laser Quest. Invented during the 70’s as a means of American military training, the present day game involve an indoor arena and using laser beams to tag each other. The player that succeeds to hit their target the most wins. The location also had other games that the students got the chance to try such as roller skating and glow golf!

Meanwhile Greensystem spent the day on a bus tour. We drove through Chinatown, Queen Street West,  Lakeshore Blvd and Harbourfront. Passing by the BMO field (which is the home of TFC and the Toronto Argos) and taking breaks at Kensington and St. Lawrence Market. It was great to see the many different pockets around Toronto and how different each district is! After breaking for dinner the group met up again and made its way to join the others at Hard Rock Cafe for the party.

Ripley’s Aquarium is one of Toronto’s newest attractions. Opening just three years ago, it holds about 16 thousand animals, so A LOT to see! The Canbe group spent the day at the aquarium looking and learning about the many incredible underwater creatures before joining others at the youth party at Hard Rock Cafe.

Walking the City

By |2016-07-12T01:55:00+00:00July 12th, 2016|Summer 2016|

It was Greensystem’s first day seeing the city after yesterday’s time filled doing tests.

We started off by seeing Toronto’s New City Hall, one of our most distinctive buildings. It is located within Nathan Phillips Square which during the summer host farmer’s markets, concerts, outdoors movies and of course the famous 3D Toronto sign. After stopping for a few quick pictures, we headed down Queen Street West, which is known here for its “trendy, hip and cool” atmosphere. t is backed with one-off shops, rock/ punk influence, and great art scene. Which suits the neighbourhood which also hold the AGO and OCAD University- a post-secondary institution specializing in art and design. Then we walked by China town and took a break at the Ontario Legislative Building, before walking back and finishing off at the Eaton Centre. The students were definitely excited for Ontario’s largest mall!

A Busy Sunday

By |2016-07-11T01:48:00+00:00July 11th, 2016|Summer 2016|

Today a large group of Brazilian students arrived, joining Quest and adding new exciting energy! For them the day entailed placement tests and introductions.

However, others spent the afternoon canoeing or taking a walking tour around Chinatown and the waterfront, without saying, a much more relaxing and leisurely time.

Meanwhile Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair Festival, a celebration of Latin culture has been in full swing. The event’s programming and jammed pack and attracts hundreds of  thousands, who come to taste, listen and dance. A couple groups of students joined in on the fun and experienced one of the most sensational and entertaining parts of living in such a multicultural city.

Wonderland

By |2016-07-10T00:41:00+00:00July 10th, 2016|Summer 2016|

Wonderland is Canada’s first major theme park and remains the largest one in the country. Students arrived right in time to watch the gates open in the morning and stayed until the evening- enjoying the many rides, rollercoasters and unique foods the park has to offer.

Canoeing

Some students today explored UofT and others took in culture and art at the Royal Ontario Museum. However, a group of twenty students spent the the day getting a little wet paddling one of Canada’s most historically embedded modes of transportation. The students paddled on lake Ontario to Toronto Island, experiencing the surreal feeling of being surrounded by nature while at the same time witnessing the beautiful city skyline. After taking a break and tossing the ball around on the island, we headed back to mainland via ferry, relaxing and letting the breeze and views wind us down.
