Everybody Dance Now!

By |2012-07-11T19:21:00+00:00July 11th, 2012|Summer 2012|

Quest students know how to party it up in style! One of the most popular activities of the summer is always the Disco Boat Cruise, and this year was no exception. Students boarded a boat at Harbourfront for a 3-hour cruise of Lake Ontario where they could enjoy some spectacular sunset views of the Toronto skyline.

Of course, taking in the scenery wasn’t the only attraction. Students busted a move and danced the night away to some great tunes while the mingled with their classmates. With the recent arrival of groups from Brazil and Italy joining our students from Saudi Arabia, Colombia, United Arab Emirates and Spain, the Disco Boat Cruise was a great way for everyone to bond.

What do you think of our students’ dance moves? Check them out in the video below.

Hanging out at the summer campus

Quest’s Summer Experience program is held on the campus of Ryerson University in downtown Toronto. Just around the corner from Dundas Square and the famous Eaton Centre shopping mall, Ryerson University provides a great place for the students to relax and socialize. Students make the most of their time on campus after class and on break.

Sharmila’s class

By |2012-07-11T15:46:00+00:00July 11th, 2012|Class of the day 2012, Summer 2012|

Welcome to Sharmila’s class, where grammar comes alive! We captured this class in the middle of a role-playing activity using non-count nouns. The criteria was for them to make a skit about a dream, they had to use at least 2 non-count nouns in their skit. It had to be 2 minutes long and they all had to have equal parts in the skit. The students had fun and actually used more than 2 non-count nouns (their dreams were hilarious and interesting!!!). After each group preformed, the students watching were to provide feedback on what they thought of their skit and they also had to say which non-count nouns were used. The were all motivated, had fun, and thought it was a great way to learn the grammar in English!

He is in a level 8 advanced class, and staying in a homestay with a Canadian family to get a total immersion experience. How is he enjoying his time in Toronto? Watch the video and find out!

Zach’s class

By |2012-07-10T22:06:00+00:00July 10th, 2012|Class of the day 2012, Summer 2012|

Today we stopped by Zach’s class to say hello, and we found a lot of fun happening! Zach’s class was playing a game called Spaghetti Letters that challenged students’ listening, vocabulary, spelling, problem solving and team work abilities. In groups, students listened to clues from the teacher and had to come up with the correct English word he was describing. Once they figured out the correct word, teams raced together to spell out the word using uncooked spaghetti noodles. The first three teams that spelled the words correctly won each round. This proved to be a very competitive activity, and all students were actively involved in trying to spell out the correct word. Activities like Spaghetti Letters are a fun way to keep class interesting.

Students take part in Salsa lesson

This weekend, our students visited the Salsa on St Clair street festival. Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world and home to a large Latin community. Salsa on St Clair is an annual street party that takes over 4 city blocks and celebrates all things Latin, including dance, music and food. Our students had a great time, and even took part in a learn to Salsa class. How did they do? Check out their moves below!

Niagara Falls

By |2012-07-09T13:44:00+00:00July 9th, 2012|Summer 2012|

One of the highlights for all Quest students is a visit to Niagara Falls, one of Canada’s most famous tourist attractions. Students had a chance to experience the historic Maid of the Mist boat tour, which takes them to the base of the falls and provides breathtaking views and even the opportunity to experience the spray of the falls. It’s been a hot summer here in Toronto, so the students quite a few students were happy to take off their blue rain ponchos and let the spray cool them down.

After the boat ride, students had free time to relax, view the falls, pose for photos and take in some of the many tourist attractions that line the famous Clifton Hill.

Brazilians and Italians are here!

By |2012-07-09T13:00:00+00:00July 9th, 2012|Summer 2012|

On Friday and Saturday, Quest welcomed groups from Brazil and Italy to our Summer Experience program. The first group of Brazilians arrived on Friday and took a tour of Casa Loma, with their activity leader Matt. Casa Loma is a beautiful historic home that has become a Toronto landmark. On Saturday, the rest of the Brazilian group arrived, and all students came to the main Quest campus for grammar and speaking tests.

A piece of the country in the city!

By |2012-07-06T19:15:00+00:00July 6th, 2012|Summer 2012|

Although Toronto is a big city, it is still possible to enjoy some nature! Yesterday, our students took a trip to High Park, which is in the west end of the city and conveniently located on the subway line. Students enjoyed playing soccer and volleyball in the massive park, and were able to take some time out to relax in the shade under the trees.

Matt’s Class – Level 8 (Advanced)

By |2012-07-06T17:52:00+00:00July 6th, 2012|Class of the day 2012, Summer 2012|

Today we stopped in on Matt’s class to see what is going on. Matt’s class is Level 8 (Advanced), and includes students from South America, the Middle East and Europe. A highly interactive class, these students love to speak English and have all bonded. In today’s class, the students participated in some drama-based activities that let them practice their speaking skills in a fun and interactive way.

Sitting in a desk all day is boring! Matt’s class walks around as part of an activity. They also mingle around discussing topics as part of a structured activities that mimic real life conversation situations.

In the video below, students are working on practicing their communication skills by putting their partner into physical postures. Tying in to this week’s theme of dreams, the partners are trying to demonstrate “You just got your dream job.”
