With all the excitement we’ve had buzzing about the city thus far, we’ve decided to take things down for tonight by catching up with Hollywood instead. Students head over to the local movie theatre to check out the latest blockbuster. With popcorn in hand- what will it be!?- The Dark Knight Rises or The Amazing Spider Man!?
Don’t forget to turn your phones off please, mom and dad will have to wait for this one!

The first goodbyes

By |2012-07-17T19:28:00+00:00July 17th, 2012|Summer 2012|

We’ve reached that time of the summer when we’re having to start saying goodbye! After four fantastic weeks in Canada, our Colombian group departed early this morning. Although they were one of our smaller groups, they made a big splash at Quest, and they will definitely be missed by students, teachers and Quest staff alike. Before they left, we sent them off in style with a farewell party at the famous Hard Rock cafe, where they celebrated the great memories they made in Toronto.

This week we said goodbye to some of our Spanish and Columbian students. These students were lively and active in class, and helped make the summer memorable. We will miss you!

Life’s a beach

What do you think of when you think of Canada? Ice…snow…nature..the beach? Believe it or not, there are some fantastic beaches in and around Toronto. One of the most popular summer destinations near Toronto is Wasaga Beach, which our groups had a chance to check out. Wasaga Beach is located on beautiful freshwater Georgian Bay, about 2 hours north of Toronto. The white sand beach is over 14 km long and the water is nice and warm – at least for Canada! Our students had a chance to relax and soak up the sun, as well as explore the town, where there are lots of cool beach shops and cafes.

“Same Planet. Different World.”

Welcome to Toronto Zoo! Located towards the suburbs of the city, the Toronto Zoo has over 5000 animals of over 500 species living within 710 acres of land divided into seven zoogeographic regions. A Toronto must-see, this activity requires and deserves a full day visit. Oh how cute those polar bears were!

Wonderful Wonderland

By |2012-07-15T13:55:00+00:00July 15th, 2012|Summer 2012|

There are a lot of really fun things to do in Toronto, but probably the funnest place of all is Canada’s Wonderland. Located just north of Toronto, Wonderland is the largest amusement park in Canada. Wonderland features 16 roller coasters, 64 rides and a water park that includes a large wave pool.
This year’s trip to Wonderland definitely did not disappoint. Despite the hot weather, the students were having so much fun that they didn’t want to leave the park!

Life is cool in the pool

It has been a pretty hot summer so far in Toronto! Luckily, there are lots of great places to cool off. Yesterday, our students went for a swim at one of Toronto’s fantastic outdoor pools. Students took a dip and relaxed poolside. It was a great way to relax and enjoy the fantastic Toronto weather while catching some rays.

Do you like to have a great time while improving your speaking skills? Then Corey’s level 5 (Intermediate) class is for you! When we stopped by Corey’s class today, it was clear that everyone was having a great time and participating. The atmosphere was lively and students were chattering away in English.

Students actively participate in Corey’s class

As a reward for their great work all week, Corey’s class spent the second part of their speaking class outside to enjoy the beautiful summer day. While outside, we captured Corey’s class playing a game called Loaded Questions. Students were given interesting questions to get them thinking, and then they shared their opinions as a class. Check it out below!

Olympic Day

By |2012-07-13T15:16:00+00:00July 13th, 2012|Summer 2012|

You may have heard of the big event going on in London this summer. On Friday, Quest got in on the fun with our own version of the Olympics. Classes got into the team spirit, and decorated themselves in team colours before traveling to beautiful Toronto Island. Once on the island, classes competed against each other in 8 different events, including relay races, tug of war, 3-legged race and a soccer shootout.
The ferry ride is half the fun!
The day turned into a heated competition for class pride. In the end, only one class reigned supreme. Congratulations to Elfie’s class, gold medal winners of the 2012 Quest Olympic games! Along with the title of Quest champions, Elfie’s class were proud winners of a pizza party. Tied for second place were Matt’s class and Lotoya’s class. Coming in fourth place were Andrea’s and Adam’s classes.

Shop ’til you Drop!

No trip to a big city is complete without going shopping, and Toronto is a great place for some “retail therapy”. Our summer campus is just steps away from Toronto Eaton Centre, the largest mall in the city that is a mecca to shoppers from all over. But there’s even better bargains to be found at Vaughan Mills Outlet Mall, just a short bus ride away! Yesterday our students took a trip there to check out the 100+ brand name outlets. Many students took advantage of the great prices, and returned loaded with bags of gifts for their friends and families at home. Surprisingly, one of the most popular stores was Bass Pro Shop, a store specializing in outdoor goods. Reports have it that students were mesmerized by the rows of fishing equipment. Hopefully they can fit it all into their suitcases to take back home!

Luc’s class

By |2012-07-12T17:00:00+00:00July 12th, 2012|Class of the day 2012, Summer 2012|

Today we spent the whole morning with Luc’s class and had a great time doing it. Luc’s class is level 9 (Advanced), and the students impressed me with their energy, enthusiasm, participation and level of English.
During the grammar period, Luc’s class worked on a writing idea. After looking at a wacky photo for inspiration, students brainstormed what they thought might be happening before, after and when the picture was taken. Students shared their ideas together, and then sat down to write a story. Students then shared their stories with their group and voted on the funniest/most creative story to share with the class. Students also worked together to edit the stories and correct any spelling and grammar errors.
In the conversation period, the students played a speaking game in small groups called Say 2 Things, Ask a Question. In this game, students move around a board and must talk about the topic that they land on, before making a question for their group members to discuss. This game can be very interesting if students ask the right questions, and the students had a great time in a relaxed speaking situations. Before long, students were whipping out their smart phones to show each other pictures and share information about their lives in their home countries.
